PURPOSE & RESPONSIBILITIES

A Council on Aging(COAs)/Senior Center is a department of municipal government authorized under Chapter 40 Section 8B of the Massachusetts General Laws. This "permissive legislation" allows a municipality to establish a Council on Aging for the purpose of coordinating or carrying out programs to address aging issues in coordination with the programs of the Executive Office of Elder Affairs.

Councils on Aging are the community focal point for social and support services to elders, families, and caregivers. These municipal agencies develop priorities, serve as advocates, and offer opportunities to access programs, services, and activities.

COA boards are involved with the planning (and/or reviewing) of annual and long-term goals. Planning helps translate the mission of the COA into specific programs and services and helps identify what resources are needed.

ORGANIZATION

The COA is comprised of 12 volunteer members. Each member serves a three-year term. Members are appointed by the Mayor and subject to confirmation by the City Council.
