Covid-19 Building Department Operations
The Fitchburg Building Department is open for business! Permits will be issued and inspections conducted. Unfortunately, due to state and federal orders, we cannot accommodate walk-in traffic at this time.
Outdoor Cafe License Applications Available Online:
Applications for Special Temporary Outdoor Cafe Licenses and Special Temporary Extended Premises Licences (For Restuarants with Alcohol Licenses) are available now online at www.fitchburgma.gov/outdoorsales. Applications are being accepted for business allowed as part of the Governor’s Phase II Reopening from Covid-19 Order No.35.
Building, Plumbing and gas permits may be applied for and paid for using the permitting software Viewpermit . This is the preferred method for the city. We will still accept paper copies of permit applications. The applications can either be mailed to us at:
Fitchburg City Hall, ATTN Building Department, 166 Boulder Drive suite 108, Fitchburg MA 01420
Or dropped off in the red mailbox City Hall. (No stamp is needed for city hall mail in the Red box).
Wiring permits must be applied for in paper form by mail or by the red mailbox. Contact Kyle Ridley Kridley@fitchburgma.gov 978-829-1886 to receive the fee.
If you have applied online the City will be reaching out to you by email to request information or to issue permits to you. The inspector will deliver building permits to your project location when approved. If you have mailed in your application or dropped it in the red mailbox the City will be using a combination of phone or email to reach you. If more than two weeks have elapsed since you applied please contact us at 978-829-1880. Leave your name and number and we will call you back.
All required inspection will be completed except for extenuating circumstances.
When you apply for a permit a staff member will contact you to either inform you that more information is needed or that your permit is ready, at that time you will be notified which inspector will be handling your application and inspections. Please contact that inspector if you wish to schedule an inspection or you have any questions. Please refer to that inspector throughout the project.
Expect delays but be assured that we will do everything we can to keep your project on schedule.
